today i thought of a story that i never blogged about...so here goes.
there are a lot of lice in india...well, at least with my friends. i had lice one while i was there, and was able to treat it and move on with life (its a pain there too!). my mom tends to have a strong hatred toward lice (understandably). so, when it was time to come home, i got to thinking that i might do a lice treatment "just in case" even though you're not supposed to do that. but the closer it got to be time to go, the more my head was itching...and we discovered that lice was going around...and i realized that i might not be treating my head "just in case."
so, my last day in kolkata i was hanging out on sudder street with a few of my friends who "work" there by begging. and Geeta started looking in my hair (it happened more than once...it wasn't that strange). but then she pulled something out...next thing i knew there i was sitting on the sidewalk with people all around having lice picked out of my hair. she'd find a bug, pull it out, and then squish it between her fingernails. it was one of those moments that you never imagine...that you could never dream up. really, who has visions of sitting on a sidewalk in kolkata having lice picked out of their hair?! and there wasn't really anything i could do about it. sure...i was a bit embarrassed, but what is there to do in that moment?!?!
it was bazaar, and embarrassing, and kind of cool all at the same time!
(oh, and i did end up using lice shampoo too - so my mom could rest at ease when i came home!)

I love your blog...bugs and all!

Melissa--your such a poetic writer.
Your story brought to mind a picture of a group of monkeys grooming each other, which in their families, that's very natural. Your experiences have been
so rich and fulfilling. Keep writing. Natalee misses you, especially when she sees your prayer card. Take care, Sheryl from
the Shelter
I love the way that feels- having lice picked out of your hair. Or when you are doing the picking, to squish the bugs- very satisfying. I did that a lot at Prem Dan when I was in Kolkata.
