back in April i started the process of "Registering" here in Kolkata. I was trying to get my residential permit (just to be a bit more "legit" in my life here...)
it did not go well.
to make a long (and stressful) story short - after lots of meetings, and turning lots of documents, a (not so minor) melt-down on my part I finally got a "temporary residential permit"
this wasn't helpful. It meant i could stay in kolkata for 6 months consecutively (which isn't any different than what i can do anyway). before it expired i was supposed to go apply for a permanent residential permit.
i did.
and then i got that horrible fever right before i was supposed to go to America. And i couldn't get back to the office to pick up my permanent number. (believe me...i tried...but i could hardly get myself to the dr office...i had to "let go" of the idea of actually getting registered).
i figured it was all for a loss, and that i'd have to start the whole process over again. i planned on going to the office when things slowed down a bit to see what i had to do.
and then, totally out of the blue, i got a phone call a couple weeks ago. my permanent residential permit was ready...all i had to do was come pick it up.
i was stunned. shocked. in dis-belief, really.
all the work i'd done didn't get the job done....and then i just let it go. i gave up....and apparently, against all odds, it worked.
i went and picked up my number on Thursday. I'm officially registered. i can't believe it. i'm so used to having to beat down doors, and track things down. i'm used to fighting to make things happen...i'm used to all the effort that it takes to get little things done (like paying my electric bill, rent, and keeping my cooking gas tanks full...you'd be surprised how much effort it takes to just live here!).
i can't believe that all i had to do was give up...and it worked out. can't believe it...but i'm thankful! while i'm busy conquering the world...maybe i'll open a bank account...so i can pay my electric bill online :)
