So India won the Cricket world cup last night...and it was awesome.
we had some friends over...we were primarily celebrating Sarah...her 10 yr anniversary w/ WMF...and a send off party as she prepares to leave for sabbatical.
half way through the party we got out the projector - and watched the end of the cricket match on the big screen....it was a good game. unfortunately watching on the internet gives a 10-15 second delay...so we'd hear the crowd cheer...and then 10-15 seconds later we'd see what happened to create the uproar.
so we knew when India won before we saw it...and we somewhat patiently waited to see the last play ourselves before running out to the veranda to see the celebrations. it was so fun. so very fun.
and then i was thinking...there really isn't anything like it in America...i mean, if we ever won the men's soccer world cup i don't think most of america woudl care...there certainly wouldn't be impromptu parades...american flags waving all around. the closest we come is when a team wins the super bowl, world series, stanley cup or march madness...but then its only localized celebration. what was so fun about last night, was realized that similar celebrations were going on all over India...every city...welling up with pride and celebration. it was a privilege to be a part of!
here's a bit of the joy and excitement!
