musings...

enjoying a lazy sunday afternoon at home :)

the days are still quite hot. we're still getting rain nearly everyday. the evenings have cooled down. once the sun is down, the temp drops to pleasant, and i even find that in the middle of the night i'll pull a sheet on while i sleep. (awesome!)

i love that i say and think things like, "oh, it feels like rain" when the breeze blows a certain way. or "it smells like rain" when it has started to rain, but its so light that you don't notice yet if you're inside - but you can still smell it.

I decided to try a brick as my pillow for my nap at SariBari one day…I’m not sold on it.

I forgot how tall I am compared with most of my friends here. While I’m at SariBari, we’re all sitting down together (and then I don’t notice the height difference nearly as much. But the other day I was there as everyone was leaving – oh my word, I’m tall. I’m about a 6-9 inches taller than most of the ladies

I’ve never been a bed maker – I’m philosophically opposed to it. Why bother – I’m just gonna get in and mess it up again at the end of everyday. Once I worked at a group home, and had to make my bed (for a year). My mom kept telling me I was going to get in the habit and I’d make my bed all the time after that. She was wrong….until now. Everyday I faithfully make my bed – but I think its cause I’ve finally found a valuable benefit to bed-making. It is so dirty and dusty here that if I make my bed everyday, than at least I can think that my bed I clean when I get in at night.

For my first Bengali class last week I decided to do a flash back to elementary school. Ya know how the first homework assignment of the year (pretty much every year) was writing a paper “what I did this summer” – well, that’s what I did. In Bengali. In English it would have taken me about 5-10 minutes to write what I wrote…it took about an hour and 15 minutes! (but it was really good practice – and my teacher was very impressed!)

Yesterday, for some reason I was very amused with the names of shops and the advertising that I saw. I passed one shop called, “The Soda Pub” with the tag-line “seller of cold drinks” made me smile. I also passed “Hotel VIP International” not to be confused with “Hotel VIP IntCon” just a bit down the road, and definitely not to be confused with “Hotel VIP Continental” just a bit further down the road.

Recently I saw a billboard, written in Bengali – and I read it, and understood why it such a good advertisement…it made me feel good that I could understand it.

Saw this jaguar yesterday in Kolkata…seemed just a little out of place. What I can’t figure out is how it doesn’t have any dents!
