Frivolity Kingdom

today i drove down a road that i don't usually drive on - in fact i'm not sure i'd ever been on that stretch of road - and i saw a store..."Frivolity Kingdom" with the tag line, "all things frivolous, priced right."

it made me smile...and it made me sad.

i thought it was quite honest of them to advertise that everything they sold was unnecessary. most stores don't do that...in fact, in general advertising by nature is just the opposite - convincing us we need something - when in fact, most of what's for sale in america is frivolous.

then i got to thinking, what if more stores were like that. we could have stores with names like these:
  • over-priced, low quality clothes - made in sweat shops
  • gadgets that won't save you time, and will break soon
  • more junk to sit on your shelves and collect dust - cheap!
  • break from reality store - watch people doing things you'd never do, violent, selfish, lust-filled stories
  • obesity waiting to happen
  • pay for this membership to get the body you can never have anyway
  • overpriced coffee you could make for yourself at home for 1/10 of the cost

i don't want to sound bitter - just some thoughts...all brought on my chance encounter with "Frivolity Kingdom"

i just watched a documentary on walmart...what do low prices really mean? low living standards for factory workers in china? low health care provisions for americans? low level of concern for taking care of earth? i guess loving money has its price. and maybe it helps us believe all the lies. stuff really does make us happier, right?
