Inside overmountain shelter. an old barn. beautiful. we planned to stay here, but there was a large youth group and a few families....pretty crowded.
That "little barn" in the distance is Overmountain shelter. you can see it for awhile before you get there. again...rare for the AT.
I got to go backpacking last weekend. i took friday and monday off work and drove down to West Virginia, met up with Merilee, and then we went to Roan Mountain, TN and hiked a section of the AT.
i love the woods. they're good for my soul...and yes, i really mean that.
i wanted to share some moments from the weekend...
- merilee and i are notoriously bad at finding the trail. this weekend was no different. once you find the AT its hard to loose...our problem is finding it!
- i don't think that i lost any toe-nails this trip! (i've had a long string of bad luck with toenails and shoes cause of the way my feet are shaped...i think i may have turned a corner)
- 2 wonderful fires
- nice people on the trail who let you know when water isn't available where it should be
- crying - and sharing this bigger journey with my friend.
- nice people who give you rides back to your car...even when you smell bad.
- 60s and sunny during the day.
- snickers, and 3 musketeers
- amazing views
- still haven't seen a bear :( i want to see one - of course from a safe distance while hiking...
- a great dinner of Indian Food back at Merilee's house.
- time in the car driving to and from
- meeting some of my friend Ryan's friends (they let me crash at their house on the way down...and then we had dinner together on the way home. Ryan lives 1/2 way between MI and WV)
- my spandex and down vest to wear in the cool fall evenings.
it was a great weekend. good. wonderful. full. a gift.

Thanks for posting the pictures. Its good for my soul to see those places again. I spent a wet, cold night in Overmountain. Glad to see it in dry conditions.
Nice pics...look forward to hearing about limping along. Perhaps we can limp together.
Proud of you as always...
Rickey
