Nasma and the katuns

Today at Nasma's (the girl with burns) dad came to Prem Don. Usually visitors are not allowed - but they obviously made an exception for her. It was so beautiful to see him with her. He cried when he saw her, and when he had to leave - he was so thankful to be with her. his concern for his daughter, and his thankfulness for the care she is receiving was obvious. while her dressing was being changed, he stood there the whole time fanning her (since its so warm!). Its obvious that he loves her - and that was good for me to see. I've had this fear that her burns may have happened intentionally (that could probably be partially blamed on this horrible book we read on child abuse in India) - but today i found out that it was totally accidental. she was playing with friends, and somehow was burned. its obvious she has a father who truly loves her. I felt blessed to be able to see their interaction - and in general encouraged about Nasma's life...and road to healing!

Yesterday Karli, Beth and I took Rozi and Sazda to "science city." its a hands on science place just about 5 minutes from the Katun's house (we had no idea where it was, so i was thankful our travel time was so short!) there were tons of fun activities to do...all in all, it was tons of fun. the highlight was the mirror exhibit. Tons of mirrors arranged different ways - and mirrors are fun, even without translation!

We invited all the Katun girls to come with us - but for some reason that i don't understand, only Rozi and Sazda could come. i think there are just some cultural things i just don't understand. It was great to have Beth along with us. She's tons of fun...and she speaks Bengali! Rozi really liked talking with her - and Beth's understanding of Bengali was able to help us understand some things better...like the fact that Rozi isn't going to get married until she finishes school...5 years from now. The marriage has been arranged - but its not immediate! (Thankfully!). Over the weekend we also learned that all the girls go to school. Before they told us that they work washing with their mom, which is true - but then they go to school later in the day. I'm so thankful that the girls are receiving an education. Learning is so empowering.
