Subway

there is a subway in Kolkata...the metro...but that's not what i'm talking about...i'm talking about a Subway restaurant! There's one of those in Kolkata too...and i am so happy about it!

on friday for community night (we have community night every friday...where we hang out and do fun things together...movies, games, eating at nicer restaurant. Anyway, we ate at Subway. now, in general the food has been good here. except for my first 2 weeks when i was sick, i've really enjoyed the food. we can get a lot of american-ish food - although its not usually quite like home, and i do enjoy the Bengali food. so, when kristen mentioned subway, i thought, okay...that would be fine...and when i got to the subway it was a totally different story. It was just like an american subway...the same tables and chairs, and menu and everything (well, not all the same, still no beef)...the same breads, and sauces...and there was American music playing. it was like i was transported to America.

i had a sweet onion chicken terriyaki sub on honey oat bread, and a chocolate chocolate chip cookie...and it was definitly the best sub i've ever eaten! one of the foods i have missed is good bread. there arne't a whole lot of bakeries here (cause its so hot) and the loaves of bread you can buy for sandwiches are all cheap white bread.

Saturday we went to see the movie, "the Namesake" which was released in america (i think its between the theater and DVD release right now) and i LOVED it. It is rated PG-13...so i can't make a blanket recomendation - but it was a great movie about a bengali family living in america - and the cultures coliding as they raise their children in america. its shot in Kolkata and NYC...and the parts of Kolkata are right near where Beth Kristen and Sarah live.

and sunday...was Easter. it was good. good to worship, and celebrate life, and to be with other believers. in West Bengal they have a lot of state holidays, cause they give time off for all the different religous holidays, so good friday was a holiday for everyone. Its been a bit hard to engage fully in the season - just different since so much of my life is different from "normal" right now...but it was a good day. i went to chruch, language class, and then spent the evening just relaxing at the WMF appartment (Beth and Sarah are out of town...and Kristen likes the company...and i like the space and soft bed!)

the weather has been heating up for sure. right around 100 the past week or so, but we've had some rain so the past few days have been a bit cooler, and less humid and easier to bear! off to Sari Bari for the afternoon and evening :)

Yay for Subway! I remember finding one in Munich after I'd been in Germany for nearly a year. I was so excited!

I also have a picture of being in Subway in Manila, our first taste of Americana after being in the Philippines for awhile. Isn't it funny what you come to appreciate?
