in the words of Shankar

on Saturday morning I went to the airport. Ellie, who has been serving at Sari Bari for the past 8 months was headed home to London...so I went with her.

while i generally don't love mornings, i do love Kolkata in the morning.
it's this magic time of day.
the city is still mostly asleep, or at least not bustling yet.
the roads are clear, and you can get where you're going so quickly.
the lighting...there is just something magic about the light that time of day
you get to watch the city slowly waking up
really, it's beautiful.

I was chatting with Shankar, a taxi driver that we know. (Shankar is awesome. he picks us up at crazy times for trips to and from the airport, he's reliable, he takes the stress out of moving around in this city). For some reason the things he was saying really cracked me up, so i thought i'd share them.

We were talking about littering. and how there is a fine for littering in America and England, and how the fine is high, so people, for the most part, don't litter. and he said, "here, everything goes out the window"

then later, we were talking about government, and I can't remember the exact context anymore, but he summed up the the conversation by saying, "you are the united states. we are independent india"

and then, at the end, he showed me that he just enrolled in a health insurance program. He showed me his insurance card, and was so proud of it. And then i asked if his mom was also covered by this program, and he stated, as if it was the most obvious conclusion, "no, my mother has me" which i think is beautiful. his mom doesn't need insurance, because she has a son who loves her, and takes care of her, and will be there for her no matter what. so beautiful.
