transcending culture

some things transcend culture. i love these moments. here are few to share with you...

a few weeks a go i saw a young boy (8-ish) driving a bike-cart on a Friday. its the day of worship, so the streets are quite. the bike was far to big for him. he had to stand on one peddle and shift his entire center of gravity to get the peddles to move. his face beamed. he was so proud of himself. i remember riding bikes that were far too big for me when i was little.

i saw a dad with his daughter slung over his shoulder. she was laughing and he was swinging her around. then he cradled her in his arms, and pretended he was going to throw her in a trash pile. He was smiling. she was laughing (although was a bit "annoyed" when he set her down). it was me and my dad years ago...although he was always dangling me over a snow bank or the swimming pool.

last week in our language class we learned the colors. I have a new teacher this month, a man, and when he was finished teaching us the colors in the book (about 10 colors) he asked us if we wanted to know anymore colors. of course we did (my class is 6 women). i thought he had some colors in mind to tell us, but he asked us what colors we wanted to know. one of my classmates was wearing a teal/aqua shirt, so we asked him how to say that color. he paused. thought for a minute then said, well, its kind of green and blue....then he admitted that he didn't really know any other colors and if we wanted to know them we should ask one of the female teachers. we got a good laugh out of that one...
