At the meat counter

There are lots of different ways to get meat over here. if you want a chicken you can go to a little shop, or to a man sitting on the side of the road with a large covered basket of live chickens and pick out the one you want. in a matter of minutes...its yours (i think they de-feather them, but i'm not sure...clearly i've never taken this option).

if you want goat (they call it mutton), or beef, you just go to the shop, look at the slab of animal hanging on the hook and let them know what cut you want. A few "thuds" of a dull cleaver later, the meat is yours (i also avoid this option, and as a bonus comment, the smell of mutton shops is my least favorite smell...and that's saying a lot cause there are some pretty nasty smells in the running for that title!)

you can also go to the meat counter of your local grocery store. , i've noticed that on Fridays the meat display is a lot more full than it is during the week (i'm guessing since its the weekend people celebrate by cooking meat.)

There are the "normal" players i'd expect - the ground chicken and beef, or chicken breast (with or without the bone), steaks, roasts. Then there are the meat selections that can be a bit hard to look at (i'll be honest, i don't usual look too closely). BUT, on Friday i took a long close look at the meat counter (i did it for you, but you may owe me). Here are some other meats you can buy - if you're interested (i'm not):

  • mutton brain - usually about 8 little brains sitting on the platter
  • ox brain (looks a lot like the mutton brain - only much bigger...i wonder if it tastes different - but i don't plan to find out)
  • pigeon (little headless de-feathered pigeon bodies)
  • mutton feet (skinned goat feet)

and the winner....

  • mutton head - skinned, but with his little nose and teeth showing, and his dead little eyes staring at you. unfortunately they keep the mutton heads close to the ground chicken so i've seen way more mutton head than i ever wanted.
just another day in the grocery store, i guess...

Mel -how can I ever repay you?

Thanks for taking one for the team. And thank you for not taking pictures.
