things that always make me smile...and saying goodbye

here are some things that always makes me smile in Kolkata...
  • ladies with their umbrellas to keep the sun off - portable shade, what a great idea...i just couldn't make it happen for me!
  • The flute man on Sudder St. He plays the same tune every time he sees me...
  • The squeaker man on Chowringee - he sits all day and squeaks these ugly birds...
  • Women perched sideways on the back of their husband's motorcycles or bikes...
  • Cold water.
  • The breeze you get while riding in an auto rickshaw.
  • Toilet Paper in a bathroom.
  • Kids walking down the street who suddenly are wearing spiderman masks
  • Cold showers.
  • Rain.
  • Kids in school uniforms

small things, bringing joy in small ways everyday!

tomorrow will not be a day of smiles though. tomorrow is good-bye day. Essentially i'll say goodbye to 95% of the people i love here tomorrow...its going to be a hard day.

in the morning Rozi is going to cook breakfast for us. she told us not to eat, so we'll have plenty of room. Leaving the Katuns is going to rip my heart out.

then to Prem Don. So many friends i have made there. I've been telling them for the past week that tomorrow is my last day, so they won't be surprised. Martha wants to come to America with me, so do some others. They often ask when i'll come back, and when i say i won't (its easier to say no than to explain that i have no idea what is "next" in my life...) they ask why. One day one of my friends said, "you will go to America, get married quickly, and then 2 people will move to India." It will be hard saying goodbye to those friends.

After Prem Don, we'll all head to Sari Bari...for our last good-byes there. i have tears in my eyes just thinking about it.

i think tomorrow i'll be a mess.

thankfully, after Sari Bari, we're going to our "debriefing retreat" We'll swim, and spend the night at a hotel...and begin the process of "debriefing" (whatever that means...)

tomorrow will be a rough day. if you get a minute to pray or me...and for us...it would be good.

my flight is Friday morning. I land in D-town about midnight on the 15th...

Mel...I am excited to have you stateside again, but I know how hard it can be to leave a place where you have loved, been loved, and grown so much!!! Remember that God holds your heart and the heart of those you've loved over there in His hands.....He'll be leading you!

I will be praying for you tomorrow.

Once, you've "debriefed" (yeah, whatever that means) and get settled in the States...I can't wait to talk to you.

Love to you, my fried n!!
