shopping and such

my friend leslie is living on an island and learning things like organic farming...she asked me about life here, and i started responding to her email and halfway through figured out it would be a great blog...maybe just give you all a better idea of life here for me...so here it is...

In terms of the earth, and living sustainably ect…it all just looks different. For example, you recycle indirectly here. In some ways it drives me nuts to throw plastic bottles away, but I know that someone will sort through my trash and gather the bottles. And my paper, and plastic bags ect…nothing goes to waste.

One thing I love is that eating more locally grown food is just what you do around here. Its what’s available. Either that or really expensive import food. There is a grocery store where you can get a lot of American stuff…but really expensive (like a jar of prego spaghetti sauce is $5.00, and a small bag of M&Ms is $6.00, a block of cheddar cheese is about $10.00. American cereal is available too…but its just more expensive. I also saw dorittos and Pringles, but didn’t buy them, and didn’t price them either. I think I could get about any American food that I really wanted, its just a matter of how much you’re willing to pay). But produce is so cheap…you eat what’s in season…cause its available…tomatoes, potatoes, green beans are all about 25 cents for a kilo (2.2 lbs). Rice is about 30 cents for a kilo. And pineapples are 75 cents each, and grapes are about 30 cents a kilo. And I love that I can walk up to any little fruit and veggie cart and buy what they have.

so theres a little slice of my life in South Asia.

Also, as a bonus piece of information...i'm typing from my laptop in my aparmtment...internet has come :) woo-hoo!
